Detectives yesterday submitted charge sheets against Monir Hossain, widely known as “Golden Monir”, in two cases filed for possessing illegal arms and narcotics at his Merul Badda residence in the city.
Md Abdul Malek, Inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police and the Investigation Officer of the case, submitted the charge sheets in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka.
Both the cases were filed with Badda Police Station under the Arms and Narcotics Control Acts.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Monir on November 21 last year and recovered a foreign-made pistol, bullets, foreign liquor, currencies of 10 countries, eight kilograms of gold ornaments and Tk 1.9 crore in cash from his Merul Badda residence. RAB conducted an overnight raid at Monir’s six-storey building on November 20, a day before his arrest.
Later three cases were filed against him for possessing firearms, narcotics and foreign currencies.
Monir, who was a salesman at Gausia Market, acquired 200 plots in his name at Badda, Nikunja, Uttara and Keraniganj, and used a luxurious car worth Tk three crore, according to RAB.
He was also a hundi trader and land broker. RAB said that they found his involvement in gold smuggling also. Monir amassed wealth approximately worth Tk 1,050 crore.
