Detective Branch (DB) of Police picked up BNP’s National Executive Committee Member Major (Retd) Mizanur Rahman from his Gulshan residence in Dhaka in the wee hours on Tuesday ahead of GCC election.
Assistant Commissioner (Gulshan Zone) Rafiqul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told journalists, that members of DB had picked him on tip off that he was plotting to make the GCC election controversial.
Many wonder the GCC election on Tuesday saw day-long rigging and widespread irregularities.
But police and detectives almost did not see it although they were able to see a plot far away from the city polls, in the capital. It is surprising.
Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said Maj (Retd) Mizan and four others have been detained on allegation of ‘evil efforts’ to make Gazipur City Corporation election questionable.
Masudur Rahman said law enforcers raided Mizan’s house and arrested him with some electronic devices those he planned to use to make the Gazipur election controversial.
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday strongly condemned and protested at the arrest of Mizanur Rahman.
In a statement Mirza Fakhrul said Detective Branch of police at dead of night on Monday picked up Mizanur Rahman breaking open door of his residence.
He said the government is out to eliminate BNP.
“BNP central leaders are being harassed and oppressed in various ways so that they cannot speak against the present misrule,” Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader claimed that Mizanur Rahman is the victim of ‘vendetta’ of the government as he is active in politics and participated in all programmes of BNP.
Fakhrul demanded immediate unconditional release of Mizanur.
Besides Mizan’s daughter Rasmia Amrin Rehman told journalists that detectives had told her to delete some Facebook Live videos she uploaded during her father’s pick up.
