Date molasses is prepared from juice extracted from date tress by extractors locally called ‘Gachis’ during winter season. Date molasses is relishing food for the Bangalees. Preparation of winter cakes without date molasses cannot be thought of.
Charghat Upazila is famous for producing molasses in Rajshahi. There are 1,17,950 date trees on 91 hectares of land in the upazila. The extraction of date juice is going on in full swing in the upazila.
As the winter has started , date molasses has started appearing in different markets of Charghat Bazaar. But the date molasses price is beyond the purchasing capacity of common people. Date molasses is being sold at Tk 70 to 80 per kg while the special molasses is selling at Tk 100 per kg.
When asked about the increase in price of data molasses, some vendors told The New Nation that due to short of supply the price of data molasses have gone up abnormally. But the price may come down in middle of next January when there will be abundant supply of molasses in all markets of the Upazila and District.
Local people said that, data juice not available in Charghat Upazila. But the traders are being making huge quantity molasses by using 1000 powers colours, wastage liquid molasses and sugars. It is very harmful for human bodies. Date tress is fast disappearing from the district. The government should take necessary steps to preserve date tress that prove us with sweet molasses to prepare delicious dishes in winter.
Charghat Upazila Agriculture Officer Munjur Rahman told this correspondent , date juice contains lot of proteins and it is good for health . The date cake is a tradition for Banaglees. Basically, less rewarding peoples (Gachis) are involved extraction of date juice. They have no enough knowledge how to process the date tress.
In this regard UNO Nazmul Haque said, Upazila Administration is very much conscious against the illegal traders. Sometimes ,upazila administration conducted mobile court .
