A gang of burglars has stolen gold with cash from a jewellery shop at the Rapa Plaza Shopping Mall in the capital.
The burglary took place after employees of the store locked up the shop “Rajlaxmi Jewellers” on Saturday night. An estimated 500 bhoris (5,832g) of gold ornament worth Tk 4.0 crore were stolen, the owner claimed.
Rajlaxmi Jeweller’s owner Mohadev Karmaker said that he was highly surprised and shocked after the robbers had stolen gold ornaments from his shop.
He said, “The employees locked the shop, situated at the first floor of the shopping mall, around 10:00pm and left the place. I was informed yesterday morning about the burglary. Security guards were on vigilance inside and outside the market round-the-clock.”
“How the robbers entered the market amid this tightened security?” he queried.
Karmaker also said that the robbers covered most of the CCTV cameras on the floor with tissue paper and scotch tape to avoid identification.
“The market has multiple steps security system. After the shops’ employees lock their shops, security personnel of the mall confirm it again. Besides, guards stay outside the market all the night. Under such a security system, how can burglars enter the market?
He also held the mall’s management responsible for the robbery.
“The robbers entered the market cutting the grills. We found the grills were broken,” said Saifur Rahman, engineer of the Rapa Plaza.
Apart from the jewellery shop, cash was also looted from nearby clothing stores — Gentle Park, Monsoon Rain and Vogue Sultana.
“We saw the locks of our shop were broken. The robbers took away Tk 25,000, breaking the locker,” Shakil Ahmed, manager of Monsoon Rain said.
On information, a team of police reached the spot.
Police collected CCTV footages and started interrogating security guards, police said.
