BSS, Rajshahi :
Many rural people most of them are women in the region have now become income-generators through dairy farming contributing a lot to improving their living and livelihood condition.
Various government and non-government organizations concerned including the commercial banks have already come forward towards providing necessary supports to the female income generators.
Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) disbursed loan worth around Taka 3.25 crore among 319 dairy farmers for milk production and artificial insemination during the first five months of the current 2015-16 fiscal year.
Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank Abu Hena Razi Hassan accompanied by RAKUB Deputy Managing Director Dr Abdul Khaleque Khan and Zonal Manager Lokeman Ali visited the farm of Mariam Khatun at Huzripara village under Paba Upazila in Rajshahi district yesterday. After getting loan of Taka two lakh from RAKUB, Mariam Khatun is now the owner of 16 high yielding milk-giving cows.
“I, myself, cut straw and grass, prepare other fodders and wash the cows and barn regularly,” said Mariom, 42, while talking to BSS in her semi-pucca house. Already, she has transformed her traditional domestic cattle-rearing process into modern and commercial one.
Her neighbour Saidur Rahman, 45, having four cows, narrated his success story of the business.
At least 36 other families of the locality are rearing cows and producing milk regularly. They become habituated to various money transactions including borrowing loans from different banks for procuring hybrid cows alongside repaying those in due time.
They were also seen disseminating their good learning and practices to their neighbours to elevate their socio-economic condition.
The producers have adopted new and improved skills, practices and technologies in cow rearing contributing to enhanced production and productivity.
The size of the market has expanded due to the growing active role of large and small-scale entrepreneurships.
Line Agencies have become proactive towards supporting market actors especially Local Service Providers (LSPs) and Service Providers Associations (SPAs) by dint of their complementary roles in extension services.
In practice, the LSPs provide training, advice and input to the producers and earn on an average Tk 4500 per month. Routinely, they extend different modern technology to the producers through setting demonstration plot in the locality.
