AS repeated cyclonic storms with catastrophic severity and tidal surge are now hitting the US coastal state of Florida after battering the Caribbean islands of Bermuda, Peuto Rice, Cuba and many others, many believe it is time for US President Mr Donald Trump to accept that climate change is a real threat to human life. He has so far dismissed it as a hoax to defeat the cause of fossil oil and coal industry and the US Energy Sector Development as a whole to debar the pace of US industrialization.
Mr Trump has also deregulated the capping on emissions and oil pipelines that former US President Mr Barack Obama has imposed for clean air. He has withdrawn from Paris Climate Agreement that he claimed to have done to best protect the US interest.
But the recent cyclonic storm that hit Texas and over flooded Huston region two weeks ago forcing families to leave homes in thousands and the storm ‘Irma’ that made landfall last night in Florida with catastrophic wind speed will no doubt help Mr Trump now to realize climate change is a serious issue. It needs to be pondered with as it concerns people life not only all over the world but also country like the USA; which appears to be also helpless to protect itself. Warming of sea level is causing such cyclonic storms.
More than seven million people have been evacuated from Florida State so far, with tens of thousands huddling in shelters. Hundreds and thousands homes were left abandoned and without electricity as the 350 miles (560km) wide storm is unleashing the state. This is bigger the size of the state. A Category 5 storm when it crashed into Cuba in the early hours of Saturday weakened to Category 3 and gained strength again downing power lines, bending palm trees and sending huge waves over sea walls as it hits Florida coast.
At least 36 million people were under hurricane warning Saturday night and 6.5 million under mandatory evacuation orders. Irma will act like a giant buzzsaw as it plows up the state’s west coast into Monday, battering cities after cities. It seems to be the worst single hurricane to hit Florida since Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992.
Federal government and Florida state government have taken all measures to face the climatic challenge. America is a resourceful nation capable to spend billions of dollars in rescue and rehabilitation. We wish people will be able to face the challenge the human miseries, brave the situation and return home at the end.
