Bangladesh government will begin evacuating people from its coastal areas to safety on Tuesday as Cyclone Amphan approaches with growing intensity, Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Shah Kamal confirmed it.
“We will start evacuating people from the coastal areas into cyclone shelters from Tuesday afternoon,” Shah Kamal said.
Met offices said that the Cyclone intensified into a ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm on Monday it may strengthen further as it bears down on the coastlines of the country and neighboring India’s West Bengal.
Meteorologists think that the Cyclone could transform into a ‘super cyclone’ and to blow 265 kmph.
Secretary Shah Kamal said the cyclone is likely to go through Bangladesh’s coasts between Tuesday midnight and Wednesday evening.
Officials said that the storm was moving northwards at a speed of 13 kmph and was centred over the west bay and adjoining areas at 6 am on Monday.
Met Office said also that the Cyclone was situated about 1,150 km south-southwest of Chattogram Port.
The Met Office asked Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports to hoist the Local Cautionary Signal No. 4.
No fishing boats and trawlers allowed to venture into the deep sea in the bay.
