Rohingya issue to be focused: C’wealth Parliamentary Confce begins today

The eight-day long 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) begins today (Wednesday) in the capital city of Dhaka.
Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) are jointly organising the CPC which will end on November 8.
The theme of CPC is, “Continuing to enhance high standards of performance of Parliamentarians.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the 63rd CPC on the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad at 10 am on November 5.
Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom is the Patron of the CPA and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will discharge duties as Vice-Patron for 2017.
CPA Chairperson and Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will preside over it. The other events will take place at the Hotel Radisson Blu Dhaka.
Rohingya issue will be discussed to find a solution in the conference.
The Rohingya crisis is not only an internal matter of Myanmar. Rather it has become a regional crisis. That is why it will be discussed for permanent solution, the organisers said.
They said that Bangladesh would request the international community through the conference to press Myanmar to take back their people.
Discussion to find solution to many problems will be held in the side event along with the prime session of the CPC, Abul Kalam Azad, a member of Media Committee of CPA said.
Over 550 delegates including 56 speakers, 23 deputy speakers, and lawmakers are expected to attend the CPC, said the committee member.
The schedule of the CPC: On November 1, arrival of the CWP Steering Committee, Co-ordinating Committee Members, Small Branches Conference Delegates and Executive Committee Regional Advisors and/or Secretaries.
On November 2, meeting of Regional Secretaries in Radisson Blu (Madhabi Floor 2), Official Opening Ceremony of the 36th Small Branches Conference, Small Branches Conference and Co-ordinating Committee Meeting followed by Performance and Review Subcommittee meeting will be held.
On November 3, Main Executive Committee Meeting, mall Branches Conference cont’d, Finance Subcommittee Meeting and Planning & Review Subcommittee Meeting will be held.
On November 4, Filming of promotional CWP video (TBC) will be held.
On November 5, Official Opening of the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference
at South Plaza of Bangladesh Parliament, addresses by the Secretaries-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Commonwealth followed by a Question and Answer session at
Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), Briefing for delegates, observers and secretaries followed by briefing for workshop moderators, discussion leaders, rapporteurs and session secretaries, Briefing for spouses/partners accredited to the conference and Regional Group Meetings are scheduled to be held.
On November 6, CWP Business Meeting and Session, Parallel session on gender equality and the role of male Parliamentarians (working title), Workshops on
“Democracy must Deliver: Role of Parliament in addressing the challenges, he role of Parliamentarians in building stronger ties within the Commonwealth: including new trade issues,” “visa issues, travel restrictions, non-tariff restrictions etc,” “Giving voice to the youth: Mechanisms for ensuring effective participation of youth in the governance process,” “Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s): How can CPA Members work with their own governments in ensuring that the SDG goals have a proper gender lens to ensure success in the areas of alleviating poverty and women’s empowerment?,” “Critical Mass: Small jurisdictions and big problems -Logistics and infrastructure challenges,” “CPA Benchmarks for Democratic Legislatures: Progress in the past 10 years, CPA Benchmarks for Democratic Legislatures: Progress in the past 10 years,” “The Climate Change Debate: A challenge for the Commonwealth?, What factors fuel the rise of different kinds of nationalism?,” and meeting of Society of Clerks at-the-Table in BICC are scheduled to be held.
On November 7, General Assembly and Election of Chairperson of the Executive Committee, Final Plenary and Closing Ceremony including receiving of Plaques for retiring Officers and Executive Committee Members and Meeting of the new Executive Committee are scheduled to be held.
