Chattogram Bureau :
Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) is going to implement sewerage treatment project (STP) involving Taka 3,800 aims at solving sewerage disposal problems in the port city.
Managing Director of CWASA Engineer AKM Fazlullah said the project is likely to be approved in the meeting of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) scheduled to be held on October 9.
After completion of the project in 2030, there will be no need of septic tanks in any building in the city as all household septic dirt will directly go to sewerage treatment plant rather Karnaphuli River, he said.
He said, “The sewage treatment plant will be set up on 165 acres of land in city’s Halishahar area.” Since its inception in 1963, the CWASA did not take measures to solve sewage problem, he said, adding that it is Awami League government which took different commendable initiatives to turn the city into a proper commercial capital.
Fazlullah said once people of the port city suffered from water crisis and the authorities concerned managed to solve the problem. “Now, we are proceeding towards sewerage treatment plant,” he added. Mohammad Ariful Islam, an engineer of CWASA, told New Nation that the STP will be implemented in phases dividing the city into six zones.
A total of six plants will be installed in the zones, he added. Director of Department of Environment, Chattogram chapter Azadur Rahman Mallik said, “It was necessary to construct sewerage treatment plant which could not be done due to lack of proper planning.”
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while inaugurating the Karnaphuli Water Treatment Plant in Chattogram on March last year directed CWASA authority to formulate sewerage treatment project. He said currently household mud and wastage are being dumped in Karnaphuli and Halda Rivers causing severe pollution.
Currently, Chittagong City Corporation collecting garbage from households dumps those in Munir Nagar and Jalalabad dumping grounds. Chittagong Municipality which began its journey with formation of Chittagong Municipal Committee in 1863 introduced drainage system in the city, but had not taken steps for removing sewerage garbage.
