Chittagong City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin urged the Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) to finalize its sanitation and drainage master plans of Chittagong city soon.
“The sanitation and drainage master plans of Chittagong city should be finalized at the quickest possible time in order to build up a healthy and livable city for the next generation”, he added.
The mayor made the call while addressing a dissemination workshop on Sanitation and Drainage Master Plans at a hotel in the city on Saturday .
Addressing the workshop as the chief guest, Nasir said the master plan drafted by Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) in 1995 could not be implemented even after 22 years as there was no mention as to which organisation would execute it.
“We have to work with challenge as there might be problem in any work”, the mayor added. Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Prof Dr Rafiqul Alam said city will be free from water-logging problem if the new master plan is implemented. The CUET VC also suggested for coordination among different public utility organisations including CWASA, CDA and Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited for better implementation of the new master plan.
Addressing the workshop, CUET Civil Engineering Faculty dean Prof Hazrat Ali underlined the importance of climate change issue in the master plan for keeping the city healthy and livable.
Organised by CWASA, the workshop was addressed, among others, by VC of Port City International University Prof Nurul Anowar, CWASA Managing director AKM Fazlullah, project director Nurul Absar, leader of the consultancy team John Charlton, Chief city planner of Chittagong City Corporation Rezaul Akrim and Engineer Subhash Barua.
