CUTA protests assault on teachers

Chittagong University Teachers’ Association (Cuta) yesterday protested the assault on five teachers of the university by members of ‘Choose Friends with Care’ (CFC), a CU shuttle train-based Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) platform, on Sunday.
 They formed a human chain followed by a rally in front of the CU administrative building at 11:30 am, demanding exemplary punishment of those involved in the incident. The protest rally was chaired by CUTA President Prof Benu Kumar Dey and conducted by Cuta General Secretary Dr Mustafizur Rahman Siddiki, while Prof Dr Rashed-un Nabi, Prof Dr Sultan Ahmed, Prof Dr Jasim Uddin, Prof Dr Mohammad Abul Mansur, Prof Dr Kamrul Huda, among others, addressed. The human chain was attended by more than two hundreds teachers. Some activists of the CFC group on Sunday allegedly manhandled two assistant proctors and three teachers of Chittagong University. The BCL activists also threatened the teachers with dire consequences and padlocked the teachers’ club and administrative building of the university.
CFC is led by former vice- president Amit Kumar and former joint secretary Sumon Mamun of CU BCL. Earlier in the morning two activists of the CFC group were detained from the campus in connection with a violence case and explosive case.
Confirming this, Md Ismail, officer-in-charge of Hathazari police station said, “We arrested two BCL men for their involvement in two different cases. They arrested were SM Alauddin Alam, former human resource management secretary of the disolved committee CU, and Md Siam, a student of 2013-14 session of the public administration department.
