Customs House authority in Chattogram has seized consignments of contraband and high-duty goods brought through Chattogram port declaring them as used old electric loom (power loom).
According to Custom House sources, Messrs. Sohail Textile, an importer from Narayanganj, imported three containers of goods from South Korea with the announcement of old power loom.
The Bill of Entry (B / E No. 102215) was submitted to the Custom House on January 18 for the unloading of 69,569 kg second hand capital machinery imported under the concessional facility of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Mallika Traders, the importer’s nominated C&F company, was responsible for unloading the consignment.
The containers were seized by the Audit, Investigation and Research (AIR) team of Custom House due to confidential information.
Subsequently, in the presence of various companies, 30,650 kg of contraband circuit breakers and high-end brands of soaps, shampoos, body lotions, face creams, shower gels and curtains were found inside the containers.
AIR branch assistant commissioner Rezaul Karim Chowdhury told that the importer was in the process of confiscating the consignment in favor of the state as it was importing second hand power loom with concessional facility. Besides, necessary legal action is being taken in accordance with the customs laws and regulations for importing high duty goods, AIR sources said.
