In the face of strong and long felt demands of the businessman community and the users of the port Customs House was shifted to Mongla from Khalishpur industrial area (in Khulna City Corporation) after a long waiting for 58 years and its all the activities started on Monday, the first day of the new financial year (2019-2020). The Customs House was accommodated in its own building (incomplete) constructed in front of the Administrative building of Mongla Port Authorities. It was ceremonially inaugurated by Suresh Chandra Biswas, Customs Commissioner on July 01. At that time Joint Commissioner Selim Shaikh, Deputy Commissioner Selim Reza, high officials of the port, leading businessmen and users of the port were present.
It is learnt from the port authorities and customs department that the activities of the 2nd Sea Port of the country started at Mongla (in Bagerhat district) on December 01, 1950. But at the same time its Customs House was established at Khalishpur industrial area in Khulna City Corporation, at least 58 kilometers away from Mongla. As a result, a businessman was to run between Mongla and Khulna like a shuttle cock at least 2 to 3 times in order to fix up the customs duty and to release the imported goods.
Consequently, on the one hand it was delayed to take delivery of the imported goods. On the other hand, businessmen were to suffer a lot of inconveniences. For that reasons they (businessmen) strongly demanded the shifting of the Customs House from Khalishpur (in Khulna Khulna City Corporation) to Mongla long ago. Though the assurance was given by the concerned authorities more than once to transfer the Customs House to Mongla, it was taken long 58 years to be materialized.
AKM Dulal, a leader of the users of Mongla port and businessman community told, after facing innumerable complications and obstacles the full-flagged Customs House was shifted to Mongla Port from Khalishpu industrial area (Khulna City Corporation) after long 58 years. As a result, businessmen and the users of the port got rid of a lot of sufferings and inconveniences.
