Public health experts on Friday suggested for imposition of curfew-like restrictions in the red zone areas to contain the fast-spreading viral infection.
They came up with the suggestion after the authorities marked the tourism district Cox’s Bazar as the country’s first red zone.
“In red zones, curfew should be imposed to ensure no movement by people to prevent further spread of the infection to other areas,” said Public Health expert Dr Lelin Chowdhury.
He stringent restrictions should be put in place so that none can venture out of their houses in the hot spot areas.
“Shutdown was lifted and all types of public transport, offices and business establishments opened in Bangladesh amid growing infections. The decision was taken to boost the economy, but it will increase the number of infections and put more pressure
on the health system,” observed Dr Lelin Chowdhury.
Officials said the government has planned to mark the affected areas across the country in red, yellow and green zones to prevent infection.
“We are thinking very carefully about the issue of red, green and yellow zones. We know that Dhaka is in the red zone,” said Prof Dr Sania Tahmina, Additional Director General of the Department of Health.
She said, “If we calculate, about 54 per cent of the cases are in Dhaka metropolis and Dhaka district has the highest number of cases in the country.”
But, we have to impose a tougher lockdown in hotspot considering the epidemic situation and contain it, she added.
Assessing the current situation, former Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Virologist Professor Nazrul Islam says, “The infection will increase in the weeks to come. We are now struggling to contain the virus and more infection will further worsen the situation.”
He also observed that the conditions in Bangladesh are that the virus is going ahead and the country is behind of it.
“We have to suffer more if many more people get infected. When people become infected, we will have to increase hospital beds and other facilities. As we have not been able increase facilities, we must put all-out efforts to contain the virus,” said Professor Nazrul Islam.
In this situation, he said, “The authorities should impose curfew or curfew like restrictions in the red zone areas, barring movements (in our out) of people and shutting down everything in the hotspots. “It is crucial to contain the spread of virus.”
