PTI, New Delhi :
At least three persons have reportedly been killed and six others injured in fresh police firing on Wednesday in Assam’s Golaghat town. Curfew has been imposed in Golaghat and Rongajan, police said.
One person was killed and 18 others, including three women, were injured when police lathi-charged protesters and opened fire in the Rongajan on Tuesday.
According to latest report, home minister Rajnath Singh has called chief ministers of Assam and Nagaland asking them to defuse tension along the borders of the two states. Rajnath told both the CMs to come up with a joint statement on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi blamed Union home minister Rajnath Singh for the violence along the state’s border with Nagaland. Gogoi said the Centre has failed to provide security in the border region.
“Yes, I am responsible as the state CM for what is happening along the border. But why are you not blaming Rajnath Singh? Why are same charges not being made against the union home minister for
failing to give protection?” Gogoi said.
The Assam-Nagaland border, he said, is a disputed subject and the area is controlled by the Centre with the help of CRPF, a ‘neutral’ force which failed to provide security to the people and properties there.
But the Centre, he said, is not taking the issue seriously at all. “It is a very serious issue but the way they are handling it, is not serious.”
