The High Court (HC) on Monday directed the lower court in Cumilla to hear and dispose a bail petition filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia by July 26 in an arson case lodged under the Special Power Act in 2015.
The High Court bench of Justice A K M Asaduzzaman and Justice S M Mozibur Rahman passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Khaleda Zia seeking bail in the case. Eight people were killed and many others injured after a bus was torched in Cumilla’s Chouddagram
upazila on February 2, 2015, during anti-government agitation.
The following day, police lodged two cases-one for murder and another under the Special Powers Act, 1974-with Chouddagram Police Station. On June 5, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia filed a petition with the High Court seeking bail in this case. A lawyer on behalf of Khaleda Zia submitted the bail petition to the High Court saying that her name was not mentioned in the first information report and there was no specific allegation against her.
