JnU Correspondent :
Cultural activists at Jagannath University (JnU), one of the leading public universities of the country, are diminishing day by day raising concern amongst the students and the activists of the cultural organisations.
The university cultural centers are losing roots owing to absence of the open cultural stage, indifferent attitude of the student organisations, and negligence of JnU authority, say observers.
Despite presence of cultural centers in the campus the university has not organized enough cultural functions on various occasions in the recent past. “If the authority would not take any necessary steps instantaneously, JnU is going to lose the ability of organizing any cultural function in future”, said cultural centers leaders.
Established barely ten years ago, JnU is the only public university having over 19,000 regular students in 31 departments whilst it has only three to four cultural centers that are not enough for such huge populace of the university.
It was observed that JnU Debating Society, Aabrittee Shangshad and Udichi Shilpi Gosthi have been organizing few events, however, JnU Theatre, and Shangskritik Kendro, Flim Society have been totally out of the scene in the campus.
When the cultural centers have beset with various problems, the authority have oblivious of the problems. JnU authority has placed only two couple rooms for its cultural centers situated on the 3rd and 4th floor of JnU cafeteria building (Abakash Bhaban).
Another important reason why the existing cultural centers of JnU have failed to organize cultural events is that the activists of different student organisations create turbulence every now and then and hinder the peaceful holding the cultural functions.
It has also been alleged that the activists often demand extortion if anyone wants to organize a cultural programme and entangle into clashes if the demand is not fulfilled.
Moreover, the cultural centers have been confronting financial and space problems as well as there is no open cultural stage in the campus. “Due to all these problems, the cultural centers did not organize functions on Victory Day, Independence Day, Martyrdom Day and so on”, said the activists of cultural centers.
JnU Aabrittee Shangshad General Secretary Riazul Haque told The New Nation, “The university authority has not built any cultural stage in last ten years of its establishment and has not given sufficient subsidy to us.”
JnU Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman stated, “Now we often cultural function than the previous years. We have also cultural committee to hold these functions smoothly”.
About the cultural stage he said, “We would build that as early as possible”.
