Cultivation of winter vegetables begins in Saidpur

Massive cultivation of winter vegetables in Saidpur can change the fate of the farmers. Winter vegetables have started to grow in Saidpur, the biggest wholesale market in Nilphamari.
These vegetables are coming to the wholesale market directly and are selling well. As a result, the farmers are getting benifit. For this reason, farmers of Saidpur are dreaming to be self-reliant in cultivating winter vegetables after getting losses in potato, rice and other crops.
In Kamarpukur, Kashiram Belpukur, Khatamodhupur, Bangalipur and Bottlagari union it has been found that most vegetables are planted in the area of Shaskandar, Porarhat, Bengmari, Achinar Danga etc. Farmers are working day and night to care for the vegetables. Some people have sprayed insects killers, some have appointed men and women for hiring, in hopes of an additional income. Shallow machine is being installed on the land to develop the irrigation system.
The fields are surrounded by winter vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, radish, corriander, red spinach, pulse spinach, bean, tomato, brinjal, mustard, sweet pumpkin, potato, palwal, chilli etc. Farmers are also getting prices in advance due to crop cultivation.
 Among the 5 union of Saidpur, most vegetables are grown in the Botlagari Union. As a result, the vegetable grows here are supplied in the outside districts, including Dhaka. For this reason, the union has been known everywhere as a vegetable area.
Farmers Anwar, Mahesh Chandra and Saber Ali of Shastakandar area of the upazila said that after cultivating paddy for several years, the farmers did not get the price but now they saw they are getting benifit by cultivating winter vegetables. Especially in the early winter, the farmers of this region are dreaming of self-reliant in winter vegetables.
In Saidpur wholesale market, bean is selling at 100 taka per kg , Cabbage at 80 taka, Cauliflower at 80 taka, Green chili at 90 taka, Corriander leaves at 250 taka, Radish at 50 taka and tomatoes at Tk 140.
Saidpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Krishibid Homaira Mondal said that almost all the land in this upazila is suitable for cultivation of vegetables. By cultivating potato, paddy and other crops the farmers could not afford such a benefit. As a result, vegetables have been widely cultivated in this season. The farmers are benefiting from it and are trying to turn around.
