Cultivation of Haribhanga mango gains popularity

The cultivation of Haribhanga, a superior variety of mango has gained much popularity among the farmers in Rangpur district.
According to DAE sources , around thousands of farmers have been cultivating the mango at different upazilas including Mithapukur in the district . Among them around 500 growers are cultivating haribhanga on their lands.
Joynal Mia a mango grower of Podaganj village under Mithapukur upazila said “I have been cultivating the mango on my farmlands for last three years instead of paddy as the low price of the paddy disheartened me before,” he said. “I earned Tk 4 lakh by cultivating Haribhanga on 3 acres of land this season”, he said.
Witnessing his success many other farmers of his village and adjacent villages have become interested in its cultivation on their homesteads and farmlands, he added.
Anisar Rahman another farmer of Sontospur village under Mithapukur upazila said that previously he had to spend around Tk 13,000 -Tk16,000 to cultivate paddy on one acre of land. But he could hardly get nominal profit or failed to recover even production cost of paddy. Being disappointed over the low price of paddy he cultivated
Haribhanga mango on the same land. Last season he earned Tk 1,20,000 and this season he has earned Tk 1, 50,000 as net profit. He is quite happy with the profit he has earned so far, he further said.
DAE sources said Haribhanga mango orchards has increased in recent times in the district. The soil of many areas in the region is also suitable for mango cultivation, sources added.
