Cultivation of drought-tolerant rice can help ensure food security

Expanded cultivation of drought-tolerant variety rice adopting newer “Short duration Aman rice-mustard/potato-mug bean-parija rice” cropping pattern can increase rice production to help ensure national food security.
Agriculture experts expressed the views at a farmers’ field day, organised for harvesting drought-tolerant variety BRRI dhan-56, on the field of farmer Krishna Chandra at village Melabor Babupara under Kishoreganj upazila in Nilphamari on Sunday afternoon.
The NGO has been expanding and popularising the newer cropping pattern among the farmers after evolving it under cooperation of Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF) and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agriculture University.
Barovita Union Federation with the assistance of the NGO organised the field day followed by harvesting drought-tolerant and short-duration BRRI dhan-56 rice in the village to get 4.50 tonnes of paddy per hectare.
Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) for Nilphamari Md Idris Ali inaugurated the crop-cutting of BRRI dhan-56 as the chief guest with Acting Chairman of Barovita Union Zahedul Islam presiding.
Kishoreganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Enamul Haque, Executive Director of KGF Dr Nurul Alam, its Director Md. Rahim Uddin and Programme Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh for Nilphamari KM Rashedul Arefin spoke on the occasion.
Officials and experts of different agriculture departments, NGOs, public representatives and more than 200 male and female farmers were present in the field day and crop-cutting ceremony of the drought- tolerant BRRI dhan-56 variety rice.
Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid said the NGO has been expanding cultivation of drought-tolerant BRRI dhan-56 on 1,500 bighas of lands in seven districts under Rangpur division this season.
He also narrated about farming technologies and benefits of large- scale cultivation of BRRI dhan-56 to harvest within 105-110 days and even in drought situation to get 4.5 to 5.5 tonnes of paddy per hectare.
The rice variety is not only drought tolerant, but also short-duration crop and early harvest of which ensures food security during seasonal lean period giving farmers enough time to cultivate mustard or potato and other early winter crops.
Farmers Krishna Chandra and Tahmina Begum said they have cultivated BRRI dhan-56 rice with the assistance of RDRS Bangladesh this season like the other 67 farmers of Barovita union under Kishoreganj upazila.
