JS body wants independent probe into N'ganj tragedy: RAB DG comes under fire

Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday recommended exemplary punishment to those responsible for the abductions and killings of seven people in Narayanganj. It also suggested for an independent investigation to identify the culprits involved in the recent abduction and killings. The parliamentary watchdog made the recommendations at a meeting of the standing committee held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with committee Chairman Tipu Munshi, MP in the chair.It also recommended taking actions following investigation into the allegation of the involvement of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the Narayanganj tragedy. Director General of Rab Mukhlesur Rahman came under fire from the parliamentary body for the alleged involvement of the personnel of the elite force in the abduction and murder of seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam, meeting sources said. In response, Mukhlesur Rahman assured the members of Parliamentary body that they would not try to save any Rab members if found involved in the gruesome killings.”We have got instructions from the highest authority to bring perpetrators to book. We will not spare anybody no matter whether they are Rab men. Rab will not play hide and seek while investigating the incident,” a lawmaker who was present in the meeting quoted the Rab DG as saying. The Rab DG also told the meeting that the anti-crime force is embarrassed following the allegations raised against it. Emerging from the meeting, Tipu Munshi told reporters that the committee expressed concern over the law and order as well as abduction and killing of seven people in Narayanganj. “We are embarrassed at the situation. And in this situation, we have no alternative but to unearth the truth,” Tipu noted. He said those who were involved in the incident, even if they were ruling party men or members of any law enforcement agency, must be tried.It was disclosed in the meeting that they were working as per the directives issued by the High Court regarding the abductions and killings. Committee members State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan, M Mozammel Hossain, Shamsul Haq Tuku, M Faridul Haq Khan, Abul Kamal Azad, Abu Sayed Al Mahmud Swapan and Kamrunnahar Chowdhury attended the meeting. Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Director General of Rab and concerned senior officials were present on the occasion.
