Court Correspondent :
A Dhaka court yesterday placed Mojnu, the lone accused in Dhaka University (DU) student rape case, on a seven-day remand to quiz him about the incident.
Metropolitan Magistrate Sarafuzzaman Ansari of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka passed the remand order on Thursday afternoon.
Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) Police Inspector Abu Siddiq sought 10 days’ remand to question Mojnu.
A second year student of the DU was allegedly raped and tortured in the city’s Kurmitola area on January 5, just after she got down from a university bus.
In the remand prayer, the IO said that, Mojnu chocked the victim and dragged her to a nearby bush. He hit the girl and tried to kill her.
As per his statement, the victim’s mobile phone set, charger and bag were also recovered from Mojnu’s possession.
The accused was arrested from Shewra in the city at about 4:05am on Wednesday after a case was filed by the victim’s father.
The incident sparked massive protests at different places after DU students blocked Shahbagh intersection on Monday and gave the authorities a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest the culprit. They also stage demonstration on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
