A faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Chittagong University unit, on Monday demonstrated on the campus protesting the killing of a fellow activist in a factional clash.
The faction, led by Suman Mamun, a joint secretary of the dissolved committee, put the main entrance under lock and key around 11:30am protesting the death. Taposh Paul, 20, a Sanskrit Department student, was shot dead and at least four others were wounded in the clash between two groups of BCL on the campus on Sunday.
They confined Vice-Chancellor Prof. M Anwarul Azim Arif to his office demanding the arrest of those involved in the killing.
They also staged demonstration in front of the administration building around 12:50pm demanding the removal of Proctor Prof. Siraj-Ud-Doullah for ‘inaction to take legal steps against the killers’.
“Proctor favours the BCL group responsible for killing Taposh Paul,” alleged Suman Mamun, saying that the “Law enforcers were dillydallying to accept a case over the murder.”
Mohammad Ismail, Officer-in-Charge of Hathazari Police Station, said the BCL men, under the banner of CFC, laid siege to the administrative building after putting all gates under lock and key around 2pm. Yesterday.
They staged violent demonstrations during the siege and vandalized the building, he said.
Refuting the allegation against him, the CU Proctor told The New Nation that the BCL men were bringing such claims to divert their internal feud.
Habibur Rahman, Sub-Inspector of Hathazari Police Station, filed a case against five identified and 60 unidentified BCL men on Sunday night over
illegal possession of firearms and sharp weapons.
The lawsuit was filed after lethal weapons — one shotgun, five cartridges, and 30 other weapons — were seized in Sunday night’s crackdown in the campus’ Shah Amanat Hall following the death of the student.
The five identified BCL men are: Ashrafuzzaman Asha, cultural secretary of the dissolved CU BCL unit, Rubel Dey, Anis, Rashed and Abir. They are all followers of Varsity Group (VEx) with Rubel their leader.
Police on Sunday night raided Shah Jalal and Shah Amanat dormitories and picked up 35 students for questioning into the incident. The weapons were seized then.
