CU tense, arms seized

A tense situation has been prevailing at the University of Chittagong as two rival groups of Chhatra League have taken face to face position aiming at exerting their respective influence on the campus on Monday.
Sources said a conflict had been continuing among the supporters of the Chhatra League’s abolished committee President Amit Kumer Basu, Joint General Secretary Suman-Mamoon group and Vice President Sabbir Ahmed group for a long time. Incidents of attacks and counter attacks between these two rival factions were also happened several times. Amit-Sumon-Mamoon supporters opposed the Sabbir supporters to enter into the campus.
In the backdrop of the continuing excitement, Sabbir followers, a few days back, assaulted a student of the Management Department named Nazrul Islam who was known as the Amit supporters.
An excitement was created between the two groups while Amit-Suman supporters tried to enter into the campus for handing over a memorandum on the incident to the VC on Monday. Sabbir supporters, at this time, took position in front of the Social Science Faculty while Amit-Suman followers at Number-2 Gate. Meanwhile, Hathazari police recovered a number of lethal weapons including a homemade LG from the Number-2 area of the varsity.
Advance holiday
In the wake of tense situation on the campus, the university authority re-scheduled its holidays from June 24 instead of June 28.
Deputy Register (Information) Forhad Hossain Khan told the New Nation that due to inclement weather, the holidays had been advanced for facilitating the students and teachers. The varsity would remain closed from Tuesday, but all administrative works and scheduled exams would continue as usual, he added.
