CU Correspondent :
A faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chittagong University formed a human chain on Wednesday , demanding cancellation of the studentship of those who threatened a teacher, assaulted a journalist, and vandalised the vice-chancellor’s office.
The faction, led by general secretary of the suspended committee of BCL’s CU unit Fazly Rabbi Sujan, also staged a one-hour sit-in in front of the proctor’s office.
Addressing the human chain, Sujan called upon police to identify the culprits and find out the supplier of the firearm, with which the teacher was threatened.
On November 5, a group of “armed youths” stormed the office of Amir Uddin, associate professor at the Institute of Education and Research, and asked him to stop his activism against Chittagong City Corporation’s (CCC’s) holding tax reassessment. The next day, president of the suspended committee of BCL’s CU unit Alamgir Tipu submitted a memorandum to the VC demanding the teacher’s removal within 24 hours. With the same demand, the same faction vandalised the VC’s office on Tuesday.
Tipu is a follower of CCC Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, while his rival Sujan is loyal to former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, who vehemently opposes the tax reassessment.
Meanwhile, two days after the teacher was threatened, CU Teachers Association (Cuta) in a statement condemned the incident and demanded punishment for the culprits. Yesterday, victim journalist Shajahan Khan lodged a written complaint with the CU proctor’s office requesting steps against his attackers.
