Jail authorities have released Maidul Islam, a Chittagong University teacher arrested for making derogatory remarks on the Prime Minister on Facebook.
The High Court granted bail to Maidul on Oct 9, but he was not immediately freed from prison as the bail document had not reached the Chattogram
jail authorities sooner. “We have released Maidul Islam from jail Tuesday morning after scrutinising his bail bond,” Prasanta Kumar Banik, a senior jail superintendent, told this news agency.
“I am happy – at least for now,” Maidul told bdnews24.com after being freed from prison.
“Many people are still in prison for expressing their thoughts. We never expect this kind of oppression from the state. It is claimed to be a country with freedom of speech, open thinking, secularism and the spirit of liberation war. No-one should be obstructed from expressing their views.”
He said: “I want to go back to my classes. It has been a long time that I couldn’t teach. Now I am happy that I can go back and teach students again.’
Iftekharul Islam, a former Chhatra League leader, filed a case on July 23 with the police under section 57 of ICT Act against Maidul after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook while expressing his support for the quota protestors.
Alamgir Tipu, president of a now-defunct committee of Chhatra League, submitted a memorandum to the Chittagong University vice-chancellor demanding the dismissal of the two teachers-Maidul Islam and Ali Ar Razi who voiced their support to quota protesters on Facebook.
Maidul had appealed for security to the proctor over the threats from Chhatra League leaders and activists. He had received an interim bail from the High Court on Aug 6.
After the end of the eight-week bail period, Maidul sought an extended bail from the Chattogram District and Sessions Judge’s Court on Sep 24. The court rejected the appeal and sent him to jail.
The Chittagong University administration temporarily suspended him on Sept 25.
