The authority of Chittagong University (CU) is going to build a new residential hall for the students belonging to the ethnic minority communities.
CU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury inaugurated the construction work of the hall this morning.
The dormitory especially for the Buddhist and students of other minority communities will be built at a cost of nearly Taka 11.5 crore on the northern side of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.
The five-storey residential hall would accommodate 225 students, university sources said.
After the inauguration, the CU authority arranged a discussion meeting on the occasion at Bangabandhu Hall auditorium.
Addressing meeting as the chief gust, the CU VC said the step of building the hall was taken following a long-standing demand of the students of minority communities.
“It is a matter of pride and joy for us as the the hall would immensely benefit the students of the minority communities”, the VC added.
Presided over by CU Registrar (acting) Prof Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Huda, the meeting was addressed among others, by convenor the CU Deans Committee Prof Dr Mohammad Sekandar Chowdhury, CU Teachers” Association (CUTA) President Prof Dr Mohammad Abul Monsur, convenor of the CU Provost Committee Prof Dr Sultan Ahmed, CU proctor Mohammad Ali Asgar Chowdhury, Prof Dr Jinobodhi Bhikko and CU Chief Engineer Mohammad Abu Saieed Hossain.
CU Deputy registrar (information) Mohammad Farhad Hossain Khan conducted the discussion meeting.
