Interview of Mostafa Hakim Group Director: Ctg yet to achieve desired development: Sarwar Alam

Mostafa Hakim Group is one the traditional names in the industrial sector of the port city.
 Former city mayor of Chittagong Manzoor Alam is the Managing Director of the Group. Five sons of the Manzoor Alam are the directors of the Group.
This industrial enriched group is a located under same roof of a prosperous family. Very recently I appeared before Director of MHG Md. Sarwar Alam and interviewed exclusively .
 He underwent study in business academic curriculum as a son of a businessman. After passing his HSC course, he went to Australia from where he obtained BBA and Masters in Accounting . After ending his academic career he joined his family business actively. While asked about his entrance in the business profession, he told the New Nation that their family tradition is business and he grown up with the touch of business mentality .
He said his grand father late Abdul Hakim contractor was a reputed business personality of Chittagong and his grand father attained success in various business sectors beside his construction business. Moreover his father and elder brother of his father Abu Taher is by born businessman. From early 1980,MH Group started business of ship-breaking, iron & steel and auto-modern brick manufacturing.
 In Chittagong first all all MH group started auto bricks manufacturing industry beside the popular Fakri bricks of Chittagong. His ambitions to expand their readymade garments sector in coming days.
While asked about unity in family members , Sarwar Alam said preconditions of the business success is family unity and cordialilty and without family good relations none can survive with rapid development. He said we are five brothers and other members of the grand uncle are still united and jointly conducting our fraternal business.
He further disclosed that we are all brothers, cousins are like as friends and we share everything in business relations each other. Sarwar Alam firmly admitted that the adopted the model and concept of their grand father Abdul Hakim as well as their fathers and grand uncle.
While asked about their involvement in politics beside the business, he said our identity was first with politics and then business. Said his grand father was the President of Pahartali ward Awami league and member of city unit of AL . He said our tradition is politics and business side by side.
His grand father rendered social service to the development of the less fortunate community of the society for the last 30 years during his life time. He also mentioned that as a politically enriched family, his cousin(uncle’s son) Didarul Alam now a lawmaker of Sitakunda constituency .
About his involvement in active politics, Sarwar Alam said now preliminary stage and I will take decision in coming days.
While asked about the commercial capital of Chittagong, he said the desired development of a commercial capital yet to be achieved and govt should decentralize the port and commerce related ministry and offices and a head office of a number of commercial banks should be transferred in Chittagong otherwise the concept of commercial capital will be undermined. Country’s development can not be think lacking behind the port city, he said.
He also emphasized the capital dredging of Chittagong port channel for easy navigation of the oceangoing vessels and now mother vessels could not anchore in inner berths. He said Chittagong Port is the gateway of Bangladesh and this port should be equipped with other global ports in neighbouring countries. He demands separate budget allocation for Chittagong as the port and customs earns lion share of the national revenue.
He also emphasised the development of the existing Chittagong International Airport as all the international flights bound to south Asia should be operated from this port .
Sarwar Alam also stressed the need for constructing deep sea port either in Sonadia or Moheskhali and construction of under pass tunnel in Karnaphuli river aimed at development of south bank of the river as well as development of Anowara and Patiya upazila for more foreign attractions. He also thanked the management of the New Nation for publishing impartial news and views and hoped for further broad circulation of the daily across the country.
