UNB, Dhaka :
Chittagong Wasa can supply only 20-21 crore litre of water per day where as the city’s demand is some 50 crore litre, LGRD and Cooperative Minister Syed Ashraful Islam told Parliament on Monday.
“The coverage of Chittagong Wasa is 42 percent. As the production is insufficient, the Wasa is supplying the water through rationing system,” he said replying to a tabled starred question of M Abdul Latif (Chittagong-11).
The LGRD Minister informed that by opening and closing 40/50 gate valves each day, water is being supplied one day a week or two days in a week under the rationing system.
Before getting water from the ongoing Karnaphuli Water Supply Project, he said that as an interim arrangement, a scheme to install 15 deep tube-wells is now under consideration of the Planning Commission.
Syed Ashraful also informed that the Chittagong Wasa has undertaken a work at its own initiative to set up five deep tube-wells on emergency basis before the holy Ramadan to supply additional one crore litre . “In the meantime two deep tube-wells started production and the remaining three deep tube-wells will start production before Ramadan,” he said.
The LGRD Minister also mentioned that the overall progress of Karnaphuli Water Supply Project is 60 percent and it will supply 14 crore litre water per day.
Athough the project was supposed to be completed by the end of this year, but the work of the project could not advance at the desired level for various reasons, he said, hoping that the project would be completed by the middle of the next year.
Replying to a tabled scripted question of Fazilatunnessa Bappi (Women Seat-30), Syed Ashraful said that the safe water coverage in the country is 88 percent while the sanitation coverage is 91 percent.
