The port city has been warmed up as the date of the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls is drawing nearer and the tenure of the existing Mayor expires on July, 2015.
The candidates from the ruling Awami League, BNP, and Jatiya Party have started their electoral activities in this regard.
The polls are expected to be held on March or April 2015 while the past mayoral elections were held on June 17, 2010.
As per the election rules, the polls should be held before 180 days of the date of expiry.
In the field of election campaign, the incumbent Mayor Alhaj M Manzur Alam from BNP and Abdus Salam, presently Chairman of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), also the Treasurer of Chittagong City Awami League, are leading the race corresponding to the other aspirants.
The incumbent Mayor Alhaj M Manzur Alam is exchanging views with the people organising meetings in the wards regularly.
In the meetings, he is reminding the voters about the development projects with a cost of Tk 9 billion during his tenure that include construction of a stadium at Bakalia, swimming pool, gymnasium, establishing 9 colleges and 2 schools and a drainage master plan.
When asked about the next CCC polls, he said, “I have already implemented a lot of development projects in the city during my last 4 years tenure. So, I am optimistic about the next poll’s result.”
As an attitude of electioneering, Manzur has already played a significant role in naming a city road after the former City Father Alhajj ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, who is also another aspirant from AL.
Talking to journalist M Manzur Alam said the decision will be approved in the next Annual General Meeting of the CCC.
Mentionable, M Manzur Alam is also the adviser to the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
On the other hand, Abdus Salam, Treasurer of Chittagong City Awami League and the Chairman of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), who is one of the aspirants of the party’s nomination for the mayoral post of CCC, has already started his campaign in Ward and Thana level of the city. He is exchanging views with the people regularly announcing his development projects in the city.
In those meetings, he is announcing that he has already implemented several projects for development of the city at the cost of more than Tk 60 billion. The projects include construction of several flyovers, widening and extension of roads and construction of residential areas in the city.
