Vegetable prices have risen abnormally in Chattogram markets on the pretext of rains and supply shortages. In the last one week, the prices of almost all types of vegetables have gone up by Tk 10-20 per kg. Vegetable sellers say the lockdown has disrupted the supply of vegetables. Besides, not many vegetables came to the city from the surrounding upazilas.
Besides, due to the recent rains, not many vegetables came from the northern districts of the country. The city’s Kazir Dewri and Gate No. 2 Karnafuli Complex were searched in the raw market yesterday. Besides, bean is being sold at Tk 160 per kg, up by Tk 20 per kg and radish at Tk 60 per kg. On the other hand, Dhersh is being sold at Tk 60 per kg with an increase of Tk 20 and Chichinga at Tk 80 per 10 kg. Besides, eggplant is being sold at Tk 80 per kg with an increase of Tk 10, raw sweet pumpkin with an increase of Tk 10 at Tk 80 and sweet pumpkin puka with an increase of Tk 5 at Tk 40.
Tita Karla has been increased by Tk 10 to Tk 80, Kachu Lati by Tk 5 to Tk 80 and Patal by Tk 10 per kg. Cucumbers are being sold at Tk 50 per kg, up by Tk 10 per kg. However, the price of tomatoes has come down. During the week, the price of tomato has come down by Tk 20 per kg and is being sold at Tk 80.
Mohammad Azam, a vegetable seller in Kazir Dewri Bazar, told that the expected vegetables could not arrive from North Bengal due to 14-day strict lockdown. Besides, vegetables have also come less from Banshkhali, Chandnaish, Sitakunda and Hathazari in Chittagong.
Ashraful Maruf, a private employee, said, “Our situation is very bad because of the lockdown.” The family has already been sent home to the village. Market prices are a huge burden for middle class people like us. The government must focus on controlling market prices.
