‘Ctg port water crisis likely to be resolved by Oct this yr’

The Karnaphuli Water Supply Project (KWSP)-1 of Chittagong WASA with a production capacity of 14 cr on litres daily is expected to be completed by October this year .
Managing Director of Chittagong WASA Engineer AKM Fazlullah told the journalists while briefing the journalists on Sunday at the water treatment project site at Rangunia. He claimed that more than 80 per cent of the construction works have already been completed but in fact more than 50% works so far completed and the rest expected to be completed by end of this calendar year.
The construction work of the project is going on at Rangunia, about 35 kilometres away from the city beside the Chittagong-Kaptai Highway costing an involvement of Tk1600 cr. JICA is providing Tk960 cr while the rest by the Bangladesh Government fund.
The project was approved in ECNEC in 2006 and could not started work due to complications of land acquisition .
After acquisition of land is completed in 2009 , the work begins in 2010 which is scheduled to be completed by 2014 which again extended by more one year.
Engr. Fazllullah admitted that presently the Chittagong WASA can supply water to the 40 per cent of the residents in the city and the vast areas of the city still remain out of WASA network. He also said the total demand of the city is over 50 crores litres of water while the CWASA can produce about 22crores litres of water daily.
At present Mohra Water Treatment Plant is producing 90 million litres of water daily and the rest 110 million litres are produced by the deep tube-wells. Project of KWSP Jane Alam replied questions of the journalist in the briefing . Project Manager Cheng also present on the occasion. Mentionable that China National Technical Import Export Corporation, Kubota Marubuni of Japan , Kolon Global Corporation of south Korea jointly implementing the project works , sources said.
