Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal said, the pioneer sea port of the country Chittagong Port will be turned into a smart port by 2021 amid implementation of a number of development projects in phases . He disclosed it while exchanging views with the media persons at port auditorium yesterday morning on the occasion of beginning 4-day long 130th founding anniversary of CPA .
The chairman chronologically explained the different proposed project of the port including Patenga Terminal, Karnaphuli Terminal Phass-1 & II and Bay Terminal.
CPA Chairman also presented statistical data of port handling during 2015 and 2016 which sustained position of 76th in Top 100 container ports of the world. He said in last year, port handled remarkable bulk cargo and containers i.e. 7.73 cr tons cargo and 23.50 lakh TEUs containers . The GDP of handling reached at 17% he added. Explaining the proposed Patenga terminal, he said this terminal will be constructed over 600 meter long space after NCT where three berths will be built. Meanwhile , the old berths f rom 1 to 8 under Phase -1, and berths from 9 to 13 under phase-2 will be rebuilt in the name of Karnaphuli container Terminal under ADB fiannce and work order expected by 2018.
About Bay terminal , the media persons were told that Bay Terminal in Patenga Sea adjoining bank with break water plan will be built over 4 kM long areas. In this terminal, there will be one container terminal, one multipurpose terminal and one liquid terminal and hoped for completion of first phase by 2021.
A Hamburgh- based port consultant is undergoing feasibility study of the proposed Bay terminal. CPA chairman further said feasibility study for a Floating Harbour in Bay and a cruise terminal in Cox’s Bazar is under going . He said after implementations of these proposed projects , CP will be turned into a Smart Port by 2021. Member (Admin) and Member(Eng) also replied to the questions of the journalists.
The press meet could not disclosed the total tune of budget for this barrel of projects and fund sources as questioned by the journalists.
In observance of the Port Today , a four day long programs have been under taken and formal inauguration was held yesterday morning through distribution of foods at Bandar republican club. The main program of the day includes hoisting of the national and CPA flags at Port Bhaban at 9 am and accords receptions to the freedom fighters and members of the martyred family.
On the occasion of port day, a two day long Port Expo will be from tomorrow morning at car shed compound and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the Expo through teleconference. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will grace the expo concluding session on Friday evening next as chief guest.
