Chittagong Port Authority sets new record of containing handling in last concluded year 2016 which breaks all previous records of containing handling.
Port sources said in last calendar year, port handled about 23.50 lakh TEUs containers. Port users sources said the import, exports trade gradually increasing day by day through Chitagong Port and 92% import, export trade are being handled through this Port . Sources said the berthing of cargo laden vessels are increasing day by day in this port. According to port sources, 20 lakh TEUs container vessels handled in 2015, 17.30 lakh TEUs in 2014, 15.40 lakh TEUs in 2013, 14.10 lakh TEUs in 2012 and 13.90 TEUs in 2011 . Sources said at the end of 2015, the activities of New Mooring Container Terminal launched with full swing and hence the handling of containers increased to this extent. But the capacity of the container storing not increasing according to increasing handling capacity .
Port users sources said the GDP of the port is gradually increasing but capacity not increasing to that ratio. Port users sources said to increase the capacity of the port , a number of project has been taken in hand recently but yet to be implemented this projects and the implementation process of Bay Terminal is also in snail pace.
Director of Bangladesh freight forwarders Association Khairul Alam Sujon told The New Nation that a number of port projects viz. increase of inner berth, construction of new yard and procurement of heavy modern handling equipments taken in hand which is required to be implemented on priority basis to increase the capacity of the port. Director (Traffic) of CP Golam Sarwar said modern handling equipments will be procured very shortly for increasing the total handling and loading capacity of the port . He further said under this project , process of procurement of 10 new gantry crane and 61 different types of handling equipments are now under process .
