Ctg Port ready to take berth of 190- meter long vessel

Minister for Shipping Md.Shahjahan Khan MP said, Chittagong Port is ready to take berth of 190- meter long and 10 meters breadth oceangoing vessels from now following the completion of massive dredging work in Karnaphuli channel and the estuary of the Bay.
 This was disclosed by the minister while addressing a meeting of views exchange with the journalists in Chittagong yesterday afternoon as Chief Guest at Port Auditorium.
He said among the 100 container berths of the world , CP stands at 86th position recently which was 90th position earlier. The globally reputed shipping affairs media Lloyds List published this list of the container berths of the world through their survey based on loading, unloading of containers during 2013.
The minister said following the berthing of mother vessels, the reputation of CP in global arena will go up as well as the import cost of the will comparatively less than earlier. He further said berthing of large type of vessels in inner berth, dredging underwent in different points of outer berth and estuary of Karnaphuli channel recently.
 The berthing of 190 meters long vessels formally launched by the minister yesterday. Port sources said following the demands of the business community of the country as well as of global desires, CPA decided to permit berthing of upto 190 meters long vessels.
Sources said before emergence of Bangladesh , CP had maximum capacity for berthing of 137 meters long vessels which expanded upto 150 meters after liberation of Bangladesh after re-excavation of the port channel. Later in 1994-95, the berthing capacity increased upto 186 meters long vessels which is now expanded upto 190 meters, sources said.
On behalf of Lloyds List, a certificate for upgrading the port’s position also handed over to CPA by the Lloyds Registrar.
Mentionable that Shanghai Port is No.1 container port across the world and Singapore takes second position out of 100 top ranking ports. According to World Port Source Web portal, there are about 4000 ports across the world and 365 ports enlisted with the Containerisation International Yearbook-2010 .
