Ctg port ranks 76th globally

Shipping Minister M Shajahan Khan on Wednesday credited the relentless work of port workers for the achievement of Chittagong port at the rank of 76th among the 100 busiest ports globally in terms of container handling.
He said the port has been playing a vital role in the country’s national economy by the hard work and dedication of the labours of the port. The present government under the leadership of Bangabandhu daughter Sheikh Hasina has been attaching importance for their wellbeing and development.
The Minister said the salary of the labours is increasing 10 percent every year; the provident fund will be introduced for the port workers from the next year.
He said the introduction of the gratuity for the port workers is under process and a contingency fund for any natural disaster and for their progeny’s marital affairs would also be launched.
‘A trauma centre for the workers in Chittagong Port would be set up soon’, he added.
The Minister said this as chief guest while distributing ever first special incentives to the workers of the port this afternoon for handling two million twenty equivalent units (TEUS) containers in 2015 that led to the port placing its ranks at 76th in the world out of 100 in terms of container handling.
A total of Tk 4.8 crore was distributed to the 6,796 workers as special incentives and the each worker received Tk 7,000.
The shipping Minister ordered the port authority to resolve all labour problems as soon as possible.
Shajahan Khan said the productivity and dynamism of the Chittagong port is increasing day-by-day. The Shipping minister said the advancement of Bangladesh has started under the leadership of Bangabandhu daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina which has been acclaimed across the globe.
