Staff Reporter :The LGRD ministry on Thursday served a show-cause notice on the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin asking him to clarify his recent remarks within seven days about demanding bribe by some government officials.On Wednesday AJM Nasir Uddin at a public meeting in the port city Chittagong, said, he received only Tk 80 crore but if he would bribe the civil servants the amount would have been Tk 300 crore to Tk 350 crore. Besides, a Joint Secretary of the ministry also demanded a Pajero jeep from him as bribe, the mayor added. Such statements by the CCC mayor drew a huge criticisms and created uproar in the government high ups as well the Secretariat. “Seeking an explanation within seven days, we have issued a show-cause notice on the CCC mayor. We would like to make our stand clear that he (AJM Nasir) must give explanation,” LGRD secretary Abdul Malek told journalists at his secretariat office on Thursday. He added they would want to know from him about the authenticity of his remark. “The CCC mayor will have to prove that which officials, how and in what way, have demanded bribe and a jeep from him. He must disclose the names of the officials,” Abdul Malek said. He said apart from a political leader, as he is also the mayor of CCC, he must settle his statement with evidence and proof.Talking to the journalists at the secretariat on Thursday CCC Mayor AJM Nasir said let’s keep the discussion going on. “I came here to attend a at the secretariat on slaughtering sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Azha, he said.Replying to a query about the explanation, he said that he has not received any letter in this regard yet. “I have not been told anything regarding the issue yet,” he said.LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said they are investigating the matter. “There will be an allegation against anyone. Based on facts and findings we are investigating the matter,” he said.He said if the allegations were found true, it would be a serious issue.The CCC mayor in his Wednesday public meeting said, “I was told that whatever amount the city corporation needs will be given as a block allocation, but I would have to give them 5 percent of the sum for that.” “When I asked where I would get the money, I was told to manage it from the contractors. How would I do that?
