Activists of different political parties and cultural organizations yestwerday brought out jubilant processions over upholding the death sentence awarded by Appellate Division bench to incumbent chief of Jamaat Islami, Motiur Rahman Nizami for his crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Soon after four members of Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha rejected the review petition of Nizami, hundreds of people brought out processions from different parts of the city and flocked to the central Shaheed Minar premises.
Welcoming the verdict, Gonojagoron Mancha in Chittagong also brought out procession from the CPC premises which ended at Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar after parading through different streets in the city.
Paying tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War, the Gonojagoron activists placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar and held a meeting there.
Addressing the rally they said the rule of law has been established in the country. They also demanded of the government to quickly execute the verdict.
Coordinator of Gonojagoron Mancha in Chittagong Sharif Chowhan said the verdict fulfilled the expectations of the people.
Welcoming the verdict Shahidjaya Begum Mustari Shofi also urged the government to execute the verdicts of all war criminals as soon as possible.. Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Chhatra league also brought out processions in the city welcoming the verdict of the Appellate Division.
The leaders and activists of the party gathered at Darul Fazal Market party office and held a rally at Chittagong press club.
Addressing the rally commander Chittagong district Muktijuddah Command council President Shahab Uddin Ahmed thanked the government as well as the Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court for fulfilling the nation’s expectation by upholding the death penalty of top war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami.
