BSS, Chitagong :
The Divisional Hill Management Committee (DHMC) yesterday issued warnings about possible landslides at Moti Jhorna and Lalkhan Bazar hill areas in Chittagong due to heavy rainfall since Saturday midnight.
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mejbah Uddin asked the residents of unauthorized dwellings on the hillocks and risky places in the city to relocate their habitation to safer places. “Living in these hills is very risky and torrential rains may even claim lives,” he added.
The district administration since Sunday morning through loud speakers asked the residents in risky hilly areas to move to safer places.
Earlier, the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) through various ways advised the residents of the risky hilly areas to relocate their dwellings to safer places.
Sources said approximately 3,500 families dwell in the risky slopes of hills there.
According to the reports provided by the Chittagong Hill Management Committee, a total of 13 hills in the city are in very dangerous state to live.
At least 189 persons were killed in different landslides in the city during last eight years, including 130 dead on June 11 of 2007.
In spite of knowing the ensuing dangers the people of low income group, mostly the rickshaw-pullers and day-labourers, make their temporary settlements and start living in those hills.
