Stockists in Chittagong are facing trouble in meeting their target of collecting 475,000 cattle hides during Eid-ul-Azha as seasonal traders have allegedly inflated the rate.
The seasonal traders were charging no less than Tk 70-80 per square foot of hide though the price was fixed for greater Chittagong area at Tk 40-45 during the Eid, according to Chittagong Raw Hide Stockist Merchant Association Vice-President Abdul Quader.
He said the stockists in Chittagong had already been in trouble since the Department of Environment closed the two tanneries on charges of polluting environment last year. “The tanners in Dhaka have informed that they will not pay more than Tk 40-45,” Quader said.
