Ctg gold smuggler gets 5 years imprisonment

A Chittagong court on Wednesday sentenced a gold smuggler to five years imprisonment in a case filed for smuggling gold bars worth about TK one crore through Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (CSAIA) in 2015.
The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Shah-e-Nur also fined the convict TK 10 thousand and in default to suffer two months more imprisonment.
The convict gold smuggler is Mohammad Absar Mia, 31, hailed from Yeasin Nagar village under Raozan upazila of the district.
Court sources said the customs intelligence authority arrested Dubai-returnee Absar with 25 gold bars weighing nearly three kilograms from CSAIA on August 16 in 2015.
Later, the Customs Intelligence authority filed a case against him with city’s Patenga Thana on the same day.
Police submitted charge-sheet against him on April 2, 2016 while the court framed charges on October 16, 2016.
The court today after examining a total of six prosecution witnesses out of 12 and passed the verdict, court sources said. The convict was present before the court during the verdict.
