Chittagong District Administration has started mobile courts at the markets from Wednesday and the mobile court is continuing. The Chittagong District Administration has already formed Market Monitoring Cell to control the price hike during the holly month of Ramadan in the current year.
The Market Monitoring Cell visited the Reajuddin Bazar yesterday and alerts the traders of kitchen market not to sell the essentials more price. The Market Monitoring Cell also called upon the traders to sell the essentials as per fixed price that was fixed by the joint meeting of Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagomng and Merchant Associations leaders.
Chittagong District Administration conducted mobile courts at Kajirdewri Bazar this morning. The Assistant Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Chittagong Morad Ahamed is leading the team of mobile court and the Monitoring Cell today. The mobile court fined several meat shops at Kajirdewri Bazar today for selling the meat at higher price than the fixed price.
The prices of essentials increased in the current month ahead of Ramzan in the port city. The retailers are hiking prices slowly now as the monitoring teams of the district administration and other concerned authorities including the Chittagong Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) is being active just before the Ramzan.
But, the consumers alleged that the prices of essentials have hiked since the first week of the current month for upcoming Ramadan. Sources said, local administration, lawmaker, mayor and concerned authorities have taken steps to control the price hike in the holly month of Ramzan.
The steps included mobile court, fair-price outlets for the common people, market monitoring cell etc in the port city. ADC of Chittagong Morad Ahamed said, “we have already formed Market Monitoring Cell to control the price hike during the holly month of Ramadan in the current year. Besides, we are continuing the mobile court to ensure the fixed price of essentials for buyers of the port city.”
Sources said, some of the importers of essential commodities and general merchants have started opening fair-price outlets for the common people here in the port city. The initiatives are claimed to have been aimed at smoother supply system of essentials during the holly month of Ramadan.
On the other hand, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) held several meetings with the businessmen, stakeholders and social and political leaders in this connection. After holding the series of meetings, CCCI president Mahabubul Alam declared that the businessmen would not hike the price of essentials in the current Ramadan. He said, “we held series of meetings with the leaders of the businessmen of retail and whole sale markets and other stakeholders. All of them assured us that they would not hike the price in the current Ramadan.”
Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CMCCI) also held separate meetings with the businessmen, stakeholders and social and political leaders in this connection. CMCCI president Alhaj Khalilur Rahman said, “Ramadan is holly month for Muslim. We requested to all businessmen not to hike the prices during the Ramadan.”
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has started the sell of essentials in open market in the port city Chittagong from May 15 last. A total of 10 trucks of TCB are selling the essentials at the open market by trucks under the Open Market Sell (OMS) program here in the port city every day now.
Under the OMS program, rice and other essentials including oil, flours, sugar etc are being sold in the 10 spots of the city. A total of 10 trucks in different areas of the city including Andarkilla, Chhotopool, Newmarket, Agrabad, Press Club, New Market and Bahaddarhat are distributing the rice and other essentials in low price.
Chief of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in Chittagong Jamal Ahamed said, “the TCB has started open sell of essentials under OMS programme from May 15.
The TCB is selling essentials by trucks in 10 spots in the port city before Ramzan which will continue till the holly month of Ramzan. The consumers can buy essentials including rice, sugar, oil etc from the TCB sell centres with low price.”
