Doctors in Chittagong have called off their ‘cease work’ after patients and their relatives suffered for five days. The president of the port city unit of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), announced the end of the ‘cease work’. “We are calling off the ‘cease work’ because we have been promised an honourable settlement by the mayor of Chittagong. We will start attending to patients in our private chambers and nursing homes for the time being,” Khan said. The next course of action will be finalised within seven days after discussions involving the mayor, BMA leaders and journalists, he added. Meherunnahar Rima, 25, daughter of a minister’s brother, died after giving birth at the private hospital ‘Surgiscope’ on January 10.Her relatives then vandalised the hospital, claiming she had died because of doctors’ negligence. Her father filed a complaint at Chittagong’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrates court against the physician couple attending Rima. A Chittagong court ordered Panchlaish police to register the complaint as a case. The order prompted the Bangladesh Medical Association’s Chittagong unit to stop all private practice and treatment of patients from last Wednesday. The doctors demanded that the case be withdrawn.
