An organization named Tiane Outdoor (BD) Company Limited of Ishwardi EPZ, Pabna has brought 879 cartons of foreign cigarettes in the form of Cotton Yarn or Yarn with Bond facility from China. Officials of the Audit Investigation and Research (AIR) branch of Chittagong Customs said that the importer tried to evade the duty of Tk 21.57 crore by importing these cigarettes under false declaration.
According to customs sources, the importer submitted the bill of entry through the Crony Shipping Corporation of Strand Road, Double Mooring Chattogram on February 22 to unload the consignment..
Subsequently, on February 24, the importer submitted the documents to EPZ Customs. Officials are skeptical about the IP (Import Permit) in the submitted documents. In addition, the customs officials contacted the BEPZA authorities and found an average match in the IP verification.
Subsequently, on February 26, the AIR team suspended the unloading of the consignment. In addition, a letter was sent to Chittagong Port the next day on 28 February for physical examination of the consignment by the container force. A total of one crore 68 lakh 30 thousand sticks of different brands of foreign cigarettes were found in 879 cartons in the physical examination.
