Customs authorities have destroyed 236 containers of goods lying in Chattogram port that are not eligible for auction. All these products are being destroyed by making a big hole in the dumping zone of the City Corporation adjacent to the embankment in Halishahar Anand Bazar of the port city.
A total of 382 containers of products listed for destruction include onions, ginger, apples, dragon fruit, oranges, grapes, frozen fish, buffalo meat, fish food, salt, garlic, sunflower oil and coffee.
Deputy Commissioner of Auction Branch of Chattogram Customs said, “Eight days ago, we started the process of destruction of 382 containers lying in Chattogram port. Due to adverse weather conditions, we were not able to destroy the same amount of products every day. On an average we destroy around 30 containers per day. It may take us another four days to complete the entire demolition process. Port users say auctioning non-eligible goods is a huge problem for the port.”
Many times customs cannot destroy non-auction goods due to legal complications. As a result, there is a jam for all these containers in the port yard. Customs should permanently designate a place for destruction of non-actionable goods.
