Ctg cheers over Nizami’s death sentence

Activists of different political parties and cultural organizations yesterday brought out jubilant processions over the death sentence awarded to incumbent chief of Jamaate Islami Motiur Rahman Nizami for his crimes against humanity during Bangladesh’s War of Liberation in 1971.
Soon after International Crimes Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict, hundreds of people brought out processions from different parts of the city and started to gather at the Chittagong Press Club (CPC) premises.
Welcoming the verdict, Gonojagoron Mancha in Chittagong also brought out procession from the CPC premises which concluded at Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar after parading different city streets.
Paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, the Gonojagoron activists placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar and held a rally there.
Addressing the rally they said the rule of law has been established in the country trough the verdict. They also demanded quick execution of the verdict to rid the nation of the stigma.
Coordinator of Gonojagoron Mancha in Chittagong Sharif Chowhan said the verdict fulfilled the expectation of the masses. He also urged the government to execute the verdicts of all war criminals as soon as possible.
Welcoming the ICT verdict Bangladesh Awami League (AL), Bangladesh Chhatra league also brought out separate processions at different parts of the city.
The leaders and activists of the party gathered at Darul Fazal Market party office and Chittagong press club held a rally there.
Addressing the rally Chittagong City AL president and former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury thanked the government as well as the ICT for fulfilling the nation’s expectation by pronouncing death sentence to top war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami. He also urged the government to scrap their (Jamaat) rights to do politics in the independent Bangladesh.
