Hundreds of Buddhist monks and leaders of different Buddhist organisations in the city on Saturday blasted the killing of the elderly Buddhist monk Mong Shwe U Chak in Bandarban district.
Buddhist monks and leaders formed a human chain at city’s Jamal Khan road infront of Chittagong press club last afternoon and demanded arrest and exemplary punishment to the perpetrators.
Unidentified miscreants killed elderly monk Mong Shwe U Chak, 75, by slitting his throat near Baishari Bihar at Uppar Chak Para village in Naikkhangchhari Upazila of Bandarban early yesterday.
Protesting the grisly killing, people of Buddhist community also brought out a rally from where they demanded for taking immediate legal steps against the killers of the monk.
The protesters strongly deplored the killing of the religious leader of the Buddhist community and expressed grave concern over the series of assassination of the spiritual leaders of different communities across the country alleged by the extremists and Islamic fundamentalists.
Hundreds of people of the Buddhist community joined the rally carrying banners of different organisations including Indigenous Workers Unity Council, Democratic Youth Forum, Hill Students Council and Jaldi Destitute & Disabled Welfare Trust.
Later, the speakers from a brief discussion meeting also warned of launching tougher programmes unless their demands are met. Prof Jinobodi Bhikkhu, Buddhist leader Arun Kumar Deb, resident monk of the Chittagong Nandankanon Buddhist Temple Joy Jyoti Bhikkhu, and Dharma Jyoti Bhikkhu, among others, addressed the rally.
