Nomination dispute: Ctg AL rivals clash, 6 injured in police action

Two groups of Awami League leaders and workers on Friday clashed following suspension of nomination of Anwara upazila and Karnaphuli Thana chairman candidates for the Union Parishad (UP) polls.
They also vandalized local party office located at Lal Dighi in the Port city.
Police opened fire and lobbed teargas canisters to restore discipline, leaving at least six persons injured, said Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jasim Uddin Chowdhury.  
The identity of the injured could not be ascertained immediately. Sources said, the names of AL nominated chairman candidates of different unions under Anwara upazila-Karnaphuli thana in Chittagong district was scheduled to be announced from the party office in the morning. Both the groups came to the party office in support of their respective chairman candidates, but the nomination process was suspended.
In view of this, the supporters of Anwara-Karnaphuli AL unit clashed with the Moslem Uddin group and vandalizes the party office. Mofizur Rahman, General Secretary of Chittagong South District unit AL, said that they programmed to select the Anwara upazila and Karnaphuli thana chairman candidates to contest in the upcoming UP election. But the programme had to be cancelled. Following that, the leaders and the activists of Anwara upazila and Karnaphuli thana rushed to the office of Chittagong South District unit AL and carried out an attack at about 11:00am. At one stage, the leaders and the activists of the office tried to resist the attackers, leading to a violent clash.
On information, police rushed to the spot and opened fire and lobbed teargas canisters to bring the situation under control.
