BSS, Dhaka :
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes of the four state-owned commercial banks (SCB) have been suspended due to expiry of term of chairmen of the boards of directors, said finance minister AMA Muhith.
“Terms of chairmen of Janata and other banks will end soon . . . CSR programmes have been suspended because we found a tendency of expending excessive money under CSR at this stage,” he told reporters a meeting at his secretariat office here.
Cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor, cabinet secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and other senior government officials were present at the meeting.
Replying to a question, Muhith said he did not send any recommendation to Janata Bank for providing money from its CSR fund for a boat-race competition in Sunamganj haor. He said Janata Bank was in healthy position but the bank is not in that position now. “The board of directors will have to shoulder the responsibility,” he added.
He said the government has already given Janata Bank Tk 808 crore to meet its capital deficit which was Tk 353 crore in 2009. Besides, the amount of default has soared to Tk 3,527 crore from Tk 1,303 crore, he added.
About the outcome of the meeting, he said the meeting discussed formation of a fund for financing different government’s programmes, including sport events.
For organizing such big programmes, funds are sought from moneyed persons besides allocation some money from the budget, he said, adding, “Now we are thinking to form a fund under the budget”.
