Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman called upon the commercial banks and non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) to boost their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities to contribute towards sustainable development of the country.
“We expect that all the banks and NBFIs will come forward with humane mind to improve welfare of the marginal people of the society strengthening their CSR activities,” BB Governor said this while addressing a CSR program held in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj district on Saturday.
He hoped that banks and NBFIs would be more attentive to people’s welfare oriented activities. ‘If we are able to work in a participatory manner, poverty could be eliminated soon from the country’, said the Governor.

Education and job focused vocational training is crucial in widening advancement opportunities for the underprivileged population segments. About 30 per cent of total CSR expenditure should be for scholarships and stipends for students from low income family in reputed academic and vocational training institutions, according to the guidelines.

As part of the initiatives, the BB Governor disbursed Tk 5.30 million among 212 extremely poor families at the programme. Each family received Tk 25,000.
The governor also expressed his interest to expand the program across the country with a view to creating self-employment facilities for the marginal population.
